How To Write Your Own Personal Financial Plan (Free Template)

You don’t need a 60-page document from a wealth manager. You need a short, clear plan written in your own words that answers nine questions. Here’s the template.

How To Write Your Own Personal Financial Plan (Free Template)

Section 1: What My Money Is For

In one paragraph: why I earn, save, and invest. Not just “retirement” — be specific. “To raise my kids well, retire from stressful work by 60, and leave my spouse secure.”

Section 2: What’s Coming In

Monthly take-home from every source. Spousal income if combined. Rental, dividend, or side income. Expected changes in the next 12 months.

Section 3: What’s Going Out

Averaged over 3 months. Split into Needs, Wants, and Debt payments. Call out any subscriptions you forgot you had.

Section 4: What I Owe

Every debt: balance, interest rate, minimum payment. Order from highest rate to lowest. That’s your payoff order (the “avalanche” method).

Section 5: My Emergency Cushion

Where it’s held, the target size (see our sizing guide), and the current balance. If below target, how much a month until it’s full.

Section 6: My Insurance

Health, life, disability, home/renters, auto. Policy numbers, premium amounts, next renewal dates. Anything missing — note it.

Section 7: My Retirement & Investments

401(k), IRA, HSA, taxable brokerage. Current balance in each. Employer match percentage and whether you’re capturing it in full. Asset allocation at the household level.

Section 8: My Big Goals (1, 3, 5 Years)

The specific things I’m saving toward. Target amount, target date, where the money is held. Separate account per goal if possible.

Section 9: My Review Schedule

When I’ll look at this plan again. Monthly: balances and spending. Quarterly: goals progress. Yearly: full rewrite.
